In this fourth episode of our series on Saul's transformation into Paul, I dive into his missionary journey, exploring the challenges he faced and the incredible perseverance that kept him going. From beatings and imprisonments to shipwrecks and hunger, Paul never wavered in his mission to share the gospel. I also reflect on the significance of his name change from Saul to Paul and how it symbolizes his adaptability and commitment to meeting people where they were. Whether as a tentmaker or supported by partners like the Philippian church, Paul's approach reminds us that mission work is a team effort, built on partnership, faith, and hard work.
As we think about Paul's ability to adapt, I challenge you to consider how God may be calling you to be part of His mission—whether by going, giving, or praying. This week, pray for missionaries worldwide and think about how you can partner in their journey.
Don’t forget to check out Missionary Essentials, a storefront site I created to share helpful items for missionaries just getting started or already on the field.

Scripture Mentioned:
- 1 Corinthians 9:22-23
"I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings."
What I've Been Thinking:
"Mission work is a team effort. Whether we go, give, or pray, we're part of God's mission to reach the world. Like Paul, we can adapt and use every opportunity to share His love.

Saul Begins His New Journey
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024
Today, I shared about Saul’s incredible transformation after his sight was restored. His first steps as a new believer were marked by baptism, a powerful commitment to follow Jesus publicly, even though he had once opposed Him. Without hesitation, he began sharing the gospel, boldly proclaiming that Jesus is the Son of God. Saul’s story reminds me that with God, anyone can start fresh, no matter their past. It’s a powerful example of how we, too, can embrace new beginnings and live out God’s purpose for our lives.
Reflecting on Saul’s journey brought up memories of my own challenges in Mozambique, especially during a season when I felt immense pressure to leave. At that time, God reminded me of the work that was still needed and gave me the strength to stay. Sometimes, when we step into the new things God calls us to, it’s not easy—there are doubts, and it takes courage to trust in His timing. Saul’s journey—and mine—both show how, when God calls us, He gives us what we need to keep moving forward, even through the hardest times.

Ananias’ Obedience and God’s Call
Tuesday Nov 05, 2024
Tuesday Nov 05, 2024
Welcome back to our five-part series! Today, we’re diving into Episode 2, "Ananias: Obedience and God’s Call." Last time, we explored Saul’s life-changing encounter with God, and now we’ll look at Ananias—a regular man who was asked to do something brave and surprising. Even though Ananias was scared to approach Saul because of Saul's reputation, he still chose to trust and obey God. Through this story, we’re reminded that God knows us deeply, has chosen us, and has a plan for each of us, just like He had for Saul.
Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart...and He will direct your paths.” Just as Ananias trusted and obeyed despite his fears, we, too, are called to step out in faith—even when it feels uncomfortable. This week, I encourage you to ask God for the courage to follow His lead. God sees the bigger picture and can use anyone, including you, to fulfill His purpose. Thanks for joining, and I can’t wait to continue our journey next week. God bless!

The Encounter on the Road to Damascus
Thursday Oct 31, 2024
Thursday Oct 31, 2024
Welcome to Go When God Calls. In today’s episode, “The Encounter on the Road to Damascus,” I talk about Saul’s incredible experience with Jesus that changed everything for him. I’ll be sharing what I’ve been learning about Paul’s journey—from someone who persecuted Christians to becoming a missionary who shared the gospel courageously. His story reminds us that no one is out of God’s reach
Saul’s journey on the road to Damascus shows how God can bring His light to even the darkest places. God used temporary blindness to help Saul see the truth about Jesus for the first time. And just like that, sometimes we need God to intervene, opening our eyes to His path for us. This episode is the first in a five-part series about Saul’s transformation into Paul. Each week, we’ll discover more about his journey and how it encourages us today. Join me as we learn together how God’s light leads us, no matter where we are.

Put It on the Shelf: Trusting God’s Timing with Life’s Big Dreams
Wednesday Oct 23, 2024
Wednesday Oct 23, 2024
In this episode of Go When God Calls, I reflect on a recent interview with Ryan Reger on his podcast, Unleashed. I share my thoughts on "putting things on the shelf," which is about hearing from God but not rushing to make things happen on our own timeline. This approach shaped my journey as a missionary, from receiving prophetic words about serving African children to trusting God’s perfect timing for everything to unfold. I’ve learned that holding on too tightly to dreams can lead to frustration but surrendering them to God brings peace and fulfillment.
I also talk about times when I felt discouraged or tried to force things ahead of God’s timing. By looking to scriptures like Isaiah 55:8-9, Psalm 27:14, Proverbs 3:5-6, and Hebrews 11:1, I hope to encourage you to trust God’s perfect plan, even when it seems delayed. As Neal A. Maxwell said, “Faith in God includes faith in His timing.” My prayer is that you find hope in God’s faithfulness and continue waiting with patience, knowing His plan is always best.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scriptures:
Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV)
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Psalm 27:14 (NIV)
“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Teaching to Multiply: Empowering Others with What You've Learned
Tuesday Oct 15, 2024
Tuesday Oct 15, 2024
In this episode of Go When God Calls, I’m excited to share a story that beautifully captures the essence of teaching, learning, and multiplying knowledge. At Beacon of Hope, we believe in empowering young men not just to meet their daily needs, but to become future leaders, fathers, and agents of change in their communities. The story you'll hear is adapted by one of our former students, who learned an important lesson about teaching others. He was inspired by a simple act—helping someone cross a river—and turned it into a powerful message about the importance of self-sufficiency and guiding others. I’ll also reflect on my own journey, the influence of my parents and church, and how 2 Timothy 2:2 reminds us to invest in others.
As you listen, I encourage you to think about how God has placed people in your life to teach you, and how you can, in turn, share that knowledge with others. We all have something valuable to offer, whether it’s a skill, experience, or simply the willingness to listen and support someone. Let’s commit to multiplying God’s work by investing in the lives around us. Whether you’re mentoring someone at work, raising children, or serving in your community, your impact goes beyond today—it multiplies into the future.

Navigating Culture and Language: My Missionary Journey in Mozambique
Tuesday Oct 08, 2024
Tuesday Oct 08, 2024
In this episode of Go When God Calls, I share my personal journey of navigating language and culture as a missionary in Mozambique. I reflect on the challenges of adapting to Mozambican customs, including learning about respectful communication and ways to connect with the local community. I also talk about my experience learning Portuguese and how it has shaped my interactions with the people I serve. Additionally, I share insights from my multicultural family and how we’ve embraced these challenges together.
I offer practical advice for anyone engaging with new cultures, emphasizing the importance of immersion, humility, and patience when learning a new language. Throughout the episode, I bring in biblical insights on how cultural sensitivity and adaptability can help us better share the gospel and build deeper, more meaningful relationships. I encourage you to see these challenges as opportunities for personal growth and deeper connection with others.
As Mother Teresa once said, “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” These words remind us that through understanding and compassion, we can foster peace and unity, no matter the cultural differences.

Forgiving For Freedom
Saturday Sep 21, 2024
Saturday Sep 21, 2024
In today’s episode of Go When God Calls, I talk about the power of forgiveness and how it helps set us free from anger and hurt. I share a story from my own life, like the time I was hurt by someone I trusted in my early missionary days. We’ll see why forgiving is so important for our spiritual growth.
We also look at how Jesus forgave others, even when He was suffering on the cross. I talk about a recent conversation with my teenage boys during Bible class here at Beacon of Hope – Africa, explaining that forgiveness isn’t just for other people—it’s for us, too, so we can live for God. We’ll also cover how forgiving ourselves can be one of the hardest but most freeing things we can do. Join me as we learn to let go of heavy burdens and find peace.
