When Obedience is Hard!
Wednesday Mar 05, 2025
Wednesday Mar 05, 2025
Obedience isn’t always easy, it often means stepping into the unknown, waiting longer than we want, or letting go of something we love without knowing what comes next. In this episode, I share a personal story of how God spoke to me about a transition I didn’t understand at the time, but later, I could see His perfect plan unfolding. Trusting God’s voice, even when it doesn’t make sense, is one of the hardest yet most rewarding parts of our faith journey.
"To obey is better than sacrifice." – 1 Samuel 15:22
I’ve been thinking a lot about how obedience isn’t just about saying yes—it’s about trusting that God’s plan is better than our own. Sometimes, He calls us to wait, sometimes to step forward, but always to trust. If you’ve ever struggled with obedience, this episode is for you. We’ll dive into Scripture, talk about the real challenge of trusting God, and explore practical ways to walk in obedience, even when it’s hard.
Scriptures in This Episode:
- 1 Samuel 15:22 – "To obey is better than sacrifice."
- John 14:15 – "If you love me, keep my commandments."
- Genesis 12:1-4 – The story of Abraham stepping out in faith without knowing the full plan.
- Philippians 2:8 – "He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!"
What to Do When Obedience is Hard:
- Acknowledge the struggle—be honest with God about your fears.
- Ask for His help—you don’t have to do it alone.
- Take the next step—you don’t need the whole picture, just one step.
- Remember His faithfulness—He has led you before, and He will lead you again.
- Find encouragement—surround yourself with people who will remind you of His goodness.
Obedience may be hard, but it is always worth it. There is peace in knowing you are walking in God’s will, and there is purpose in every step, even when you don’t see it yet.

Wednesday Feb 12, 2025
Missions has changed a lot over the years, but the heart of it remains the same - saying yes to God no matter the cost. In this episode, I talk about how missionaries in the past faced extreme challenges, from long and uncertain travel to waiting months for letters or financial support. Today, we have amazing tools like WhatsApp, social media, and online banking that make mission work easier, but challenges still exist. Whether you're just curious about missions, supporting missionaries, or serving on the field, I hope this episode encourages you.
Scripture References:
- Luke 9:23 – "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me."
- Matthew 28:19 – "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit."
- 1 Corinthians 9:22 – "I have become all things to all people that by all possible means I might save some."
- Philippians 4:19 – "And my God will meet all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."
Key Quotes from This Episode:
- "Missions has always been about following God, no matter the cost."
- "Missionaries in the past faced long journeys and complete isolation, relying fully on God’s provision."
- "Social media isn’t just about posting—it’s about building relationships and inviting people to walk the journey with you."
- "The mission hasn’t changed, but the tools we have today make it possible to reach more people in new ways."
Tools Mentioned:
- WhatsApp – Stay connected with family and ministry partners.
- Western Union / WorldRemit – Helps with sending and receiving funds.
- Canva – Great for creating social media posts, newsletters, and ministry graphics.
- Excel – A helpful tool for organizing finances, reports, and budgets.
- Epistle.com – A private social platform for keeping ministry partners updated.

- Hudson Taylor – Trusted God completely and immersed himself in Chinese culture.
- Amy Carmichael – Served in India for 55 years without a furlough.
- Jim Elliot – Sacrificed his life to bring the gospel to the people of Ecuador.

I've Been Thinking About:
- How Paul would have used social media if he had it.
- How modern technology is helping missionaries stay connected while still facing challenges.

The Ripple Effect of Saying Yes
Tuesday Jan 21, 2025
Tuesday Jan 21, 2025
Have you ever wondered if one small act of obedience could make a difference? In this episode, I share how saying yes to God, even in the smallest way, can create ripples that touch lives, transform communities, and impact generations. I’ll talk about the challenges of stepping out in faith, share a story about how one young man’s life was changed through obedience, and offer three practical steps you can take this week to say yes to God.
We’ll also reflect on how God doesn’t ask for perfection—He asks for faith. Whether you’re called to serve in your family, your community, or in missions, your yes matters.
Scriptures Mentioned:
- Isaiah 6:8
"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send me!'" - Matthew 28:19-20
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." - Luke 9:23-24
"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it." - 2 Corinthians 12:9
"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."
3 Practical Steps to Say Yes:
- Pray for Clarity: Spend time asking God where He is calling you to say yes—whether in your family, community, or missions.
- Take One Small Step: Your yes doesn’t have to be big. Start with a small act of faith, like reaching out to someone in need, giving to a cause, or committing to pray.
- Trust the Process: Remember, your yes is part of God’s bigger plan. Trust that He will guide and equip you every step of the way.
I’ve Been Thinking…
Sometimes we overanalyze God’s call, waiting for the perfect moment or plan. But the greatest act of faith is often just taking the first step. Your yes doesn’t have to be big—it just has to be willing. God will guide you and provide everything you need as you trust Him.
Famous Quote:
"God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supply." – Hudson Taylor

Stepping Out in Faith: 24 Years of God's Faithfulness
Tuesday Dec 17, 2024
Tuesday Dec 17, 2024
Welcome back to another episode of Go When God Calls!
Today’s episode is close to my heart as I celebrate 24 years of God’s faithfulness here in Mozambique, Africa. When I stepped off the plane on December 15, 2000, I thought I was saying yes to just one year. Little did I know what God had planned. This isn’t just my story; it’s a story of stepping out in faith and trusting God with the unknown. Whether you feel called to serve in your church, love your neighbors, or go to another country, this episode is for you. God’s plans are bigger than we can imagine, and when you say “yes,” He will equip you every step of the way.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed or unsure when God calls you to do something, I’ve been there, too. But here’s what I’ve learned: God doesn’t call the equipped; He equips those who say yes. From driving a Land Rover in Africa for the first time to trusting God for provision, I’ve seen Him show up time and time again. And if you’re feeling tired or like your efforts don’t matter, remember this: God is at work behind the scenes, and your faithfulness today impacts generations to come. Don’t give up—your yes matters.
Scriptures Shared:
- 1 Corinthians 3:6 – "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow."
- Jeremiah 29:11 – "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."
- Galatians 6:9 – "Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap the harvest if we do not give up."
What I’ve Been Thinking About: "Missions is not a solo journey. Those who go and those who give are partners in completing God’s mission. Your role matters—whether you’re stepping out in faith or supporting others who do."
Quote to Remember: “God doesn’t call the equipped; He equips those who say yes.”

Suddenly God – A Life-Changing Encounter
Wednesday Dec 11, 2024
Wednesday Dec 11, 2024
Welcome to Go When God Calls! In today’s episode, I talk about those sudden, powerful moments when God moves and changes everything. These encounters don’t come from our striving but from His grace and perfect timing. I share stories from the Bible about how God shows up unexpectedly to bring transformation. Whether it’s Moses at the burning bush or the Holy Spirit coming at Pentecost, these moments remind us that God is always working, even when we don’t see it.
I’ve been praying for this kind of encounter—for my family, the teenage boys I work with in Mozambique, and this nation. Revival begins with God’s presence and timing, not our efforts. I encourage you to pray for a fresh encounter with God, one that changes your life and strengthens your faith. Let’s trust His timing and believe that He is working for our good. If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone who may need to hear about God’s faithfulness. Join me next week for another episode of Go When God Calls!
Scriptures Mentioned:
- Isaiah 43:19 – "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?"
- Acts 2:2 – "Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting."
- Exodus 3:5-6 – "Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground."
- Genesis 32:28 – "Then the man said, 'Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.'"
- Acts 9:3-6 – "As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?' 'Who are you, Lord?' Saul asked. 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,' he replied. 'Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.'"

Paul's Legacy – Letters of Faith and Lasting Impact
Tuesday Nov 26, 2024
Tuesday Nov 26, 2024
In this final episode on Saul's transformation into Paul, we reflect on the powerful legacy he left. Through letters like Romans and Philippians and the relationships he nurtured, Paul shows us that our actions today can ripple into future generations. His example reminds us to use the tools at our disposal—whether letters or social media—to share the gospel and invest in others.
Legacy isn’t about achievements but the lives we touch. Like Paul, we can plant seeds of faith that grow far beyond what we see. This week, reflect on how you can use your words, actions, and resources to build God’s kingdom. Pray for opportunities to encourage others and make an eternal impact by sharing God’s love.
Here's What I’ve Been Thinking
Our legacy isn’t about what we achieve—it’s about the lives we touch and the seeds of faith we plant. Like Paul, we can use our words, actions, and resources to leave a lasting impact for God’s kingdom. Whether it’s encouraging someone in their faith, mentoring a young believer, or partnering with a missionary, our efforts can ripple far beyond what we see.
This week, take a moment to reflect: How can you use what God has given you to build His kingdom? Pray for opportunities to encourage others or support someone on their journey. Remember, the eternal impact of our actions today is immeasurable. Let’s make the most of every opportunity to share God’s love with the world.
Highlighted Scriptures:
- Philippians 4:13 – "I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
- Philippians 1:3-5 – Paul's gratitude for gospel partnerships.
- 2 Corinthians 9:7 – The joy of cheerful giving.
- Philippians 4:17 – A reminder of the eternal rewards of generosity.
- 2 Timothy 4:7-8 – "I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith."

From Persecutor to Persecuted, Paul's Trials and Perseverance
Tuesday Nov 19, 2024
Tuesday Nov 19, 2024
In this fourth episode of our series on Saul's transformation into Paul, I dive into his missionary journey, exploring the challenges he faced and the incredible perseverance that kept him going. From beatings and imprisonments to shipwrecks and hunger, Paul never wavered in his mission to share the gospel. I also reflect on the significance of his name change from Saul to Paul and how it symbolizes his adaptability and commitment to meeting people where they were. Whether as a tentmaker or supported by partners like the Philippian church, Paul's approach reminds us that mission work is a team effort, built on partnership, faith, and hard work.
As we think about Paul's ability to adapt, I challenge you to consider how God may be calling you to be part of His mission—whether by going, giving, or praying. This week, pray for missionaries worldwide and think about how you can partner in their journey.
Don’t forget to check out Missionary Essentials, a storefront site I created to share helpful items for missionaries just getting started or already on the field.
If you're interested in learning how to use modern tools like social media for ministry, stay tuned for details on my January course, Missions Minded Media—it’s going to be a game-changer!
Scripture Mentioned:
- 1 Corinthians 9:22-23
"I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings."
What I've Been Thinking:
"Mission work is a team effort. Whether we go, give, or pray, we're part of God's mission to reach the world. Like Paul, we can adapt and use every opportunity to share His love.

Saul Begins His New Journey
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024
Today, I shared about Saul’s incredible transformation after his sight was restored. His first steps as a new believer were marked by baptism, a powerful commitment to follow Jesus publicly, even though he had once opposed Him. Without hesitation, he began sharing the gospel, boldly proclaiming that Jesus is the Son of God. Saul’s story reminds me that with God, anyone can start fresh, no matter their past. It’s a powerful example of how we, too, can embrace new beginnings and live out God’s purpose for our lives.
Reflecting on Saul’s journey brought up memories of my own challenges in Mozambique, especially during a season when I felt immense pressure to leave. At that time, God reminded me of the work that was still needed and gave me the strength to stay. Sometimes, when we step into the new things God calls us to, it’s not easy—there are doubts, and it takes courage to trust in His timing. Saul’s journey—and mine—both show how, when God calls us, He gives us what we need to keep moving forward, even through the hardest times.
